B-Secur collaborates with TI to deliver ECG/EKG monitoring for wearable devices

B-Secur has developed an electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) solution based on the Texas Instruments (TI) AFE4950 analogue front end (AFE) for photoplethysmography (PPG) and EKG/ECG sensing.

Intended to accelerate the design of next-generation consumer wearables, the integration provides high-performing sensing capabilities for wearable devices like premium smartwatches and Wi-Fi-connected optical heart-rate monitors, and enables advanced features for identification, wellness and health monitoring in Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

According to B-Secur, it is the industry’s first solution with a fully integrated EKG/ECG and PPG signal chain that allows for synchronous sampling of cardiac activity with dry electrodes used in battery-operated products. It follows an announcement from B-Secur that it has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its innovative HeartKey ECG/EKG software.

Combining HeartKey and TI’s AFE4950 will enable device manufacturers and partners to eliminate months of R&D with a fully integrated sensor, electrical and signal processing solution. It is being described as a key development that will enable heart-health features to become widely available in the rapidly evolving consumer wearables sector.

The collaboration is part of B-Secur’s drive to speed up the development and adoption of high-performance biosensing solutions by device manufacturers worldwide.

AMOLED driver chip supplier Sheng Micro completed 100 million yuan Series A financing

Inductive position sensor targets EV motor control

Microchip Technology Inc. has extended its family of inductive position sensors into the electric-vehicle (EV) motor control market, with the launch of the LX34070 IC. Designed for EV motor control applications, the new position sensor include features that make it functional-safety-ready for ISO 26262 compliance in the Automotive Safety Integrity Level–C (ASIL–C) classification. The LX34070 also is suitable for a range of commercial, industrial, and medical applications.

The inductive position sensor is said to enable lighter, smaller and more reliable motor solutions compared to Hall-effect position sensors and older magnetic resolver solutions, eliminating the cost, weight, and size of the magnetics.

The LX34070 provides a 4.5 V to 5.5-V voltage range with a maximum voltage up to 18 V. The extended operating temperature range is -40°C to 160°C. Calibration can be done via VIN signal or GPIO digital signal pins. In addition to ASIL-C compliance, the position sensor provides AEC-Q100 certification to grade 0.

The LX34070 inductive position sensor offers several advantages compared to magnetic resolvers and linear voltage differential transducers (LVDTs), at a fraction of the cost, said Microchip.

By using PCB traces rather than transformer-based magnetic windings and coil structures, the LX34070 device has significantly smaller size and weight compared to alternative solutions that can weigh as much as a pound, explained the company. In addition, the LX34070 offers higher accuracy because it does not depend on magnet strength and improves device robustness by actively rejecting stray magnetic fields.

The LX34070 can be paired with other functional-safety-ready Microchip 8-bit AVR and PIC microcontrollers, 32-bit microcontrollers, and dsPIC digital signal controllers to further streamline EV motor control designs, said Fanie Duvenhage, vice president of Microchip’s mixed signal and linear analog business unit.

The LX34070 inductive position sensor, housed in a 14-pin TSSOP package, can be purchased now via a Microchip sales representative or purchasing website, and authorized worldwide distributors. The company also offers a full range of functional safety packages to support ISO 26262 compliance requirements.

Open-frame power supplies for medical and industrial applications

Diodes introduces 1.8V PCIe 4.0 ReDriver to extend PCB trace lengths while minimizing power consumption

Diodes announced that it has further enhanced its range of PCIe® solutions with the addition of new high-speed data rate ReDriver™ devices. The DIODES™ PI2EQX16924 is the industry’s first available PCIe 4.0 ReDriver that operates from a 1.8V voltage rail, where competing solutions have to use a 3.3V rail. It addresses a broad variety of computing and data communication applications.

The PI2EQX16924 only consumes 288mW and 27mW respectively when in active and low-power modes, particularly important for saving battery charge in portable applications.

The device features four differential channels that are independently configurable in terms of receiver equalization and flat gain. This mitigates inter-symbol interference and allows signal loss compensation, so that longer PCB trace lengths can be achieved. As the I2C interface is used for such configuration work, firmware requirements are minimal.

The PI2EQX16924 is capable of handling data rates up to 16Gbps. The device is compliant with PCIe 4.0 and backwards compatible with PCIe 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 generations. An industrial temperature range from -40°C to 85°C is supported.
