Toshiba halts operations at a chip fab in Japan after earthquake

According to Reuters, Toshiba Semiconductor has suspended operations at a plant in Japan’s Oita city that makes semiconductors for automobiles and industrial machinery due to a strong earthquake that hit the area over the weekend.

The report quoted Toshiba’s statement saying that some equipment at the plant was damaged and the company was still analyzing the impact of the accident on production.

A Toshiba spokesman said the plant produces system LSI chips, of which about 60 percent is sold to automakers and industrial machinery makers. It is not yet known when the factory will resume production, but an update may be provided on Tuesday.
